Save Schools, Save Lives
We are 8th-grade students, and recently, we have seen many stories of school shootings in the U.S., so we decided to research it. After researching the topic, we realized how big of a problem they really are here in the United States. There have been over 1,700 school shootings in the United States alone since the 1999 Columbine High School shooting.
We are trying to spread the word across Chicago and make people understand the effects of school shootings nationwide. Awareness is key in any issue. The more people know about an issue, the more that people can act and find solutions. More people need to be aware of the horrors of school shootings. Too many lives are lost for them to be on the News for a minute and then ignored by the population. Another thing is that because this issue is mainly a U.S. problem, people who live here deserve to know about this huge issue with their country. In Chicago, there haven’t been many instances of this issue compared to other parts of the country but people still need to know about this issue, especially because we have such a high population of people.
Our goal is to inform people about the effects of school shootings in America. Children need to be protected and need to know how to be safe. People having knowledge of how to be safe in this scenario is extremely important. Ignorance can put people in danger and frequently cause loss of life. Therefore, we are advocating for our school to host assembly’s annually to inform our peers about how to be safe in a shooting. This topic also has to be more frequently talked about in class due to the severity of the issue. We understand that it is a sensitive topic but children, parents, and educators need to be informed about safety precautions in this scenario. Oftentimes children are put in danger because of people unknowingly putting them in danger with risky actions. People being informed is key so we will be actively advocating for assemblies and school lessons on the issue. Do your part and spread the word or advocate for lessons on this subject in your own school. Keep children safe by keeping children informed on how to be safe.
